Marduk – Memento Mori Review

Released on: 1st September 2023

With thirty-three years experience it is safe to compare Marduk to Marduk. There have been a few changes in the line-up since the bands conception. The overall sound has not changed much, if at all, so you cannot dismiss them for a lack of consistency. And, what a glorious, menacing and evil sound it is.

Memento Mori [old Latin for a reminder that you are going to die – Ed] brings back Nightwing vibes with a fresh touch of Greco inspired Aggro. Revitalising the bands tested sound for a delicious piece of universal catharsis. There are adroit riffs in abundance on album fifteen. The triad cut through silence like the Fates through thread. Devouring peace of mind like a Gorgon takes sailors.

Marduk once the purveyors of incessant blast beats have got a killer set of interesting patterns that are unrelenting in their drummed up cavalcade. Unafraid to slow down and smell the dew off the roses. There is a lot of play on Memento Mori. There is a lot of talent behind, not just the riffs, but the song writing too.

Intense but emotionally cleansing Marduk are transcending the euphoric heights that black metal has traditionally been able to reach. Memento Mori was thirty-three years in the making. It is a mature sound for a well roasted bean and something to get you up filled with unrestrained vigor.

8/10
