This Is Halloween

With Halloween looming over like a see you next Tuesday (it is next Tuesday.) We, at Soundscape, thought it might be a good idea to pool our favourite Horror-esq albums together for a pre-spookfest Influencer. It is quite hard choosing when many of the acts we cover and follow are already immersed in otherworldly paraphernalia. But, here we propose some spooky treats for your devilish ears.

David’s picks:

Creature Feature: The Greatest Show Unearthed Returns

Creature Feature capture the goofiness of halloween with a funky, dare I say Spookabilly, groove. Very much the Beverly Hill Billies meets the Munsters. All of Creature Features’ releases are filled with fun and whimsy.

Favourite track: Dead Next Door

Blutengel: Un:Sterblich – Our Souls Will Never Die

Chris Pohl has been producing Blutengel for a long time, twenty five years. Which is scary because I was listening to them in college and that was before the Insta was invented. Blutengel can be translated as Angel of Blood, like the vampire Lestat. Another reason to feel old: I was reading Anne Rice on papyrus– that was before paper was invented. Anyway, back on track, Blutengel is thematically about vampires, les enfants de la nuit.

Favourite track: We Belong to the Night

Matt Elliot: The End of Days

Jumpscares get lame pretty fast. So why not settle down with something bereft of the endless attention grabbing hooks of pop music. Elliots’ work is The House of the Fall of Usher to say– the Death Note remake.

Favourite track: Flowers for Bea

Type O Negative: Bloody Kisses

O’ man! Blood & Fire was my gateway into Goth. I first heart it on the Mortal Kombat soundtrack, on tape, and you know what? I turned out better for it. This is my favourite Type O album. And, I can guarantee your M’am will get pissy about the intro beating through your bedroom door.

Favourite track: Blood & Fire

Hecate Enthroned: Dark Requiems… and Unsilent Massacre

Black Metal– so scary. Well it used to be, back in my day!

Favourite track: Forever in Ebony Drowning

Nat’s picks:

Count Spookula: Monster a Go-Go

A friend introduced me to these whilst we were chilling at our camp at Nummirock festival this year. They are ridiculous and I love them. Remember: Count Spookula is for life, not just for Halloween.

Favourite track: Sexy Witch

Echopraxia – Pumpkin Palace

Can’t very well have a Halloween feature and not include this Halloween-themed EP on the list! Five tracks of Halloween-themed instrumental goodness, this goes hard from start to finish.

Favourite track: Grasp of Malok

Carach Angren – Where The Corpses Sink Forever

I’m going to include these on the list, if only for the fact the face paint they wear onstage is perfection.

Favourite track: General Nightmare

Ghost – Meliora

If I don’t include spooky Abba on my list, then my boyfriend will probably tell me off.

Favourite track: Square Hammer (well, that’s the one I seem to hear him singing the most!)
