Whenever an artist rises to feverish heights of popularity too fast for the world’s level of comfort, and in the impressive way that Sleep Token has, it often divides the audience into those who need to find some way to rip the star out of the sky, and those who need to let everyone know that they are a true fan of the band. But when you add an air of mystery in the way that Sleep Token has managed to through successfully hiding their identities, you unintentionally create a hungry cult-like following whose outpouring of love can accidentally align with the slow destruction of an artist. And this is one part of the message that I have uncovered through digging even deeper into Sleep Token’s masterpiece of an album Even In Arcadia.
At this point in time Sleep Token has captured the #1 spot on many platforms, in many genres, and across many countries. Haters are gonna hate, and they have been VERY vocal about their negative feelings towards a band they have clearly never allowed themselves to listen to, because Sleep Token deserve serious credit for managing to bring a unique sound to a scene that has been progressively sounding more and more homogenized as musicians focus on trying to catch the latest trend by trying to create music for the algorithm.
Now, I am not so removed from the scene that I don’t understand why true fans of metal and hard rock are having a hard time accepting a band such as Sleep Token as one of their own; because Sleep Token is not metal, not in the true sense of the word, but then they are metal because of their classical influence and djent-heavy guitar riffs, low growls, devastating drums, and so much more; and right there is what I love abut Sleep Token, the fact that they are so much more than a single genre, and it would be an insult to their creative selves to even try to place them in single genre-box. The degree in which they are a step away from it all is that one degree that is their signature style, and within it they have crafted an album that has so much depth to it that it is inspiring to witness.
I am a lyric listener, and since day one, Sleep Token has crafted some of the most beautifully haunting and poignant lyrics around. Sure, they weren’t always easy to decipher, and for many years this was exactly what Sleep Token needed to be to build upon their mystery, but with Even In Arcadia, Sleep Token has taken an even more vulnerable step into the light by choosing to use lyrics that rise closer to the surface of their human hearts, and for the first time I feel that Vessel has let a crack show in his mask, and I have no doubt that this was an intentional move to help remind listeners that when they are worshipping him, or when they are attacking him, that they are dealing with a person who has real feelings, and to be mindful of that fact, because both sides are pulling irresponsibly at this man daily, a sentiment that can be felt in the line from Sleep Token’s single Caramel “Every time they try to shout my real name just to get a rise out of me. Acting like I’m never stressed out by the hearsay.”
Even In Arcadia is a gorgeous album for those willing to stop drinking the anti-Sleep Token Kool-Aid for five minutes. Seriously, it wasn’t on my 2025 music bingo-card that the Nickelback cancel-culture would set their sights on a band as diverse, intelligent, and exciting as Sleep Token; but here we are, surrounded by a bunch of critics who cannot give you a reason as to why they hate this band beyond the usual ‘they aren’t metal’ “they aren’t that good’ “they suck’ mob-mentality, low frequency, skibidi-mindsets. I am not saying that you must like this band, but to say that they have no talent or songwriting skills is absolutely ludicrous, and further proof that some of these people don’t have a deep history or respect for music or art in general.
Since the beginning of their career, Sleep Token has shown their diverse influences in their music, and with Even In Arcadia they celebrate these influences in an incredible way. Every song is a journey and a history lesson, from classical to jazz to R&B to hip-hop to rock to metal to djent to 8-bit Nintendo and beyond, this album is an abstract painting over a hyper-realistic landscape of true human experiences and artistic will.
I don’t want to single out anyone in this band because every member deserves praise for their efforts here, and I mean that, no one in Sleep Token has ever called in their parts. Every member adds their signature style to song and somehow it all just comes together in the perfect way. I do need to point out that their drummer is easily one of the top two drummers in the world currently. Until I saw II (Two) play I never thought anyone would rise to the God-tier level that I have always placed Danny Carey from TOOL at, but this artist has no one above him. The emotional weight and natural technical skill that he places on his drumming is unreal and inspiring and the entire world of drumming owes this artist their show of appreciation, because he is not like the rest, which is exactly how it should be because neither is Sleep Token.
The mixing and mastering on Even In Arcadia is flawless. Every song is a masterclass in sound production and should be taught in music school. The order in which these songs are presented are clearly deliberate as they offer the beginning and continuation of a journey through the artists current stage in life. I would not be surprised if we see another album sooner than later that continues with this storyline, at least this is my hope because, and if I can be so bold here to say it, I fucking love this album.
This is my current Album of The Year, and not just because of everything I just wrote, but because of how this album has connected with me at this point in my life, and after reading so many comments about how this album has connected with others, it is clear to me that Sleep Token has finally found the best way to blend both the mystery and raw human emotion behind their band. They have found a way to harness the chaotic power of their creative storm in a way that it can be directed at the hearts of their listeners in an attainable way, and in a world where so many lead singers manufacture their voices to sound like others who have achieved mass success, it is a breath of fresh air when a single voice can undeniably cut through all of the average, and Vessel’s surely does.
Listen to this album, and I mean really listen to it with intention and without distraction. What you will find with Even In Arcadia is an album that acts as a diary entry from an artist who has spent a decade in hiding from the limelight, and who has finally trusted us enough to step into it long enough for a single snapshot.
What a journey it has been. Thank you, Sleep Token.
