Hautajaisyö – Surun paino Review

Release date: March 20th

It’s always a good day when Hautajaisyö releases new music, and Surun paino is another great listen from the Finnish fourpiece.

The fifth album from the band, by this point Hautajaisyö have their sound and approach nailed, and Surun paino is a great blend of death and thrash, coming together to create an album that will get your head banging and your foot tapping in response. In the press release, it describes the band as trying to make the album have that ‘live’ sort of feel, and they have certainly achieved that (although it does make me feel a little more sad I haven’t yet had the chance to make it to an actual show of theirs yet over the years I’ve been a fan).

Kasvoton Kuljettaja is perhaps my favourite of the album. Opening with this wonderful chugging, meaty riff, it suckers you right in and the rough, guttural vocals hit you like a ton of bricks immediately afterwards. Whilst the album as a whole does have that ‘live sounding’ vibe to it, this track in particular feels like it was tailor-made to be performed onstage due to its energy and momentum.

Admittedly whilst there isn’t a massive amount of variety on the album as a whole, it’s not like Hautajaisyö need to reinvent the wheel. They do their blend of death and thrash (or rather, Koljonvirtacore) extremely well, and Surun paino is a very solid listen as a result. It’s an album that you’ll definitely want to come back to, and is one of my favourite releases of theirs to date.
