Gravves – Oh, The Joy Review

Release date: 27th April 2018

It’s always nice to discover an excellent band, and it’s even better when you find out they’re actually pretty local to you – so when I got into Gravves, it was a double win! Their latest EP Oh, The Joy is an energetic punky bit of work that will hopefully do very well for the trio.

The EP is absolutely relentless. Gravves attack at full pelt with an unrivalled energy and Oh, The Joy is just one of those releases that you absolutely know will be a riot in a live environment. From the bellowed lyrics, to the fast-paced drums, massive riffs and the powerful bassline, everything comes together to create an in-your-face and striking listen that will knock you for six.

There’s plenty of excellent tracks to sink your teeth into, and an early highlight is Monster Truck. The song as a whole is a fairly simplistically constructed one but it’s an effective approach – and it’s a track that will get stuck in your head due to the striking and to-the-point vocal line. Another highlight is the final track L Is For Loser, which really ends the EP on a high. It’s a massive-sounding track with a lot of bite and momentum, and it’s particularly great to hear that the EP finishes with just as much energy as it started with. (It also means that it links quite well with the opening track, meaning it is very easy to just listen to Oh, The Joy on repeat!)

Gravves have really delivered with Oh, The Joy and it’s an absolute pleasure to listen to. Make sure you catch these talented guys live if they’re playing near you!
