Singled Out: alt. – Passage

Passage is the brand new and exciting single from alt., an alternative-metal outfit from Adelaide, Australia, and it is taken from their upcoming dark concept EP Passage which is set to be released in two week’s time (May 15). Set in 2073, Nevermore is a story set in a world ravaged by war, corruption and greed, telling the story of the wealthy fleeing a dying Earth whilst the rest are left to fight for survival and a chance to reach the promised new world of Nephilim.

I absolutely adore the way the introduction builds up the song before you get hit with some stunning vocals and it’s enough to give you goosebumps. Mostly led by the smooth cleans, when the almost-aggressive rapped/spoken section hits (with an additional brief harsh line at the end of it), it really feels like a 180 – especially when paired with the more aggressive instrumentation, and almost stops you in your tracks, forcing you to pay attention and ensuring your focus remains solely on the song. It’s clever, and helps the track to feel very immersive as a result.

The track itself follows the escape route of the EP’s protagonist and his wife, and there’s a definite urgency to the track as a result, with the accompanying music video pairing nicely with the theme and storytelling – but you don’t need the backstory to enjoy the song as a standalone piece either, as it holds up well on its own.

An all-round very powerful listen. alt. have really delivered with Passage, and it is one of those songs that will stick in your head long after you’ve finished hearing it.
