brutalist is the debut album from sace6, a duo with a staunch fear of the ‘shift’ key, who blend R&B and metal together to create a unique, intriguing sound. At eleven tracks in duration, brutalist is a stunning musical journey, and sace6 have crafted a gorgeous, lush-sounding album you’ll keep wanting to come back to.
You never know quite what to expect with each twist and turn that brutalist takes. Sometimes it’s chilled beats, sometimes it’s crushing walls of sound, and sometimes it’s brutal harsh vocals – but everything has its own specific place and the flow is absolutely stunning. sace6 have really got their sound and approach nailed, and brutalist is a very rewarding listen as a result of this.
Although I tend to be one that leans more towards the heavier styles of music, I found myself especially drawn to eighth track dolorous, which is one of the softer and more chilled songs of the album. The smooth, gentle vibes of the instrumentation pair exquisitely with the soft and emotional vocal performance, and it’s honestly enough to bring a tear to your eye. It’s an all-round stunning track with a lot of colour and body despite its simplicity, and is a really moving performance. (And additionally, the run into immediate harsh vocals with following track nepenthe is honestly like whiplash in the best possible way – sace6 really bring the variety and versatility, and the juxtaposition is perfect.)
A really unique piece of art, brutalist is an album not to be missed. sace6 have really created a sound that is truly their own, and hopefully this will be the start of something great for this talented duo.
