Singled Out: Whispered – Ikikaere

Sometimes, there comes a time when you feel like giving up hope that a favourite band of yours will ever release new music again. It was 2016 that Whispered put out their last album Metsutan – Songs Of The Void and after numerous years of hearing that they were working on new material…but with nothing to show for it, I was all but ready to throw in the towel when it came to believing I would ever hear fresh music from Whispered.

And then, after confirming two (!!) live shows in Finland at the tail end of 2025 (in Helsinki and the SaariHelvetti festival in Tampere), we finally got blessed with some brand new Whispered material in the form of the mighty Ikikaere on April Fool’s day, but let me tell you – this song is absolutely no joke!

Ikikaere feels like it blends both old and new Whispered together. It has a more old-school vibe akin to what they crafted on their Thousand Swords debut, yet it also wouldn’t sound out of place on their Metsutan album either. The thing about Whispered is that their sound is so unique with the Eastern-folk instrumentation blending seamlessly with a more straight-forward melodeath approach – so no matter what they do, you can always tell it is them. Ikikaere is big, epic and memorable, and beautifully emotive to boot – honestly, the first time I heard the song, I nearly cried. Both from how moving and passionate the song sounds, along with the fact I was finally hearing new Whispered music.

Good things come to those who wait, and fans of Whispered have certainly done their time! Make sure you check the song out below!
