Interview with The Timing

There is nothing better than ‘discovering’ a band whose songs blow you away from the get go!

As soon as I clicked on the go button for ‘Afraid To Fall’, the first track on this Guildford based rock band’s Soundcloud page, and the riff and drums kicked in I was completely sold.

All four tracks on offer here are excellent, up-tempo rockers with great vocals, killer hooks and choruses which just make you want to listen over and over.

This band are too good not to share so here are The Timing.

Who are you and what do you do?  We are The Timing and we rock! Angus – Guitar/BV’s, Lucy – Vocals, Johno – Guitar/BV’s, Nick – Bass/BV’s and Alun – Drums.

Where did the bands name come from? – We kept seeing the word “timing” and its importance everywhere. In articles, lyrics and our manager once said ‘its all about the Timing’, so it stuck.

How did you get started? – Having all played music for ages in different projects, and knowing each other from around the local scene, so we decided we wanted to combine our talents and experience and see what our musical love child would look like and this is the result!

What have you got going on at the moment? – We’ve already got loads of tunes recorded, with a few up on our pages. so this summer is about gigging and getting to meeting all of you beautiful people.

Favourite music and why? – we all have our different musical tastes and influences but the one thing we all agree on is a love of rock music.

Favourite book and why? Lucy -‘The book that inspired me most is ‘Shantaram’ by David G. Roberts. It is set in India and  has the most beautiful use of language in it, which is captivating. I like to think it has influenced the way I write my lyrics.

Favourite film and why? Angus – ‘Lord of the Rings’, cos’ its badass!

Lucy – ‘Midnight express’, because of the cinematography.

Johno – ‘Empire Records’, because no matter how many times I see it, it puts me in a good mood.

Nick – ‘Walk Hard’, Walk The Line spoof that I could watch every day for a year and still find funny.

Alun – ‘Pocahontus’, Because i like to paint with all the colours of the wind.

Best experience in the business? – Getting up on stage every night, throwing some shapes, having fun with the band and fans and  making noise!

Why should Soundscape readers care? – We just hope they see how much we care and how much of ourselves we’re put into our music. This is life for us!

Tell our readers an interesting fact about the band? – We have home baked merchandise 🙂

What’s the best and worst things about touring?  Best – Getting to gig with other bands and go to places and meet people you wouldn’t get to meet in the day to day. Hanging out with your friends all day in the van and gig at night! its the whole adventure!

Worst – Hygiene!

Most embarrassing thing to happen to you while in the band?  Lucy – Being a diva towards sound man about not getting any sound through my in-ear monitors, then realizing they weren’t plugged in!

Johno – Forgetting to turn off my tuner at the start of a song, and starting with no sound!

Nick – Putting one foot on a fold back monitor causing jeans to rip at crotch.

What’s your writing and recording process like?  We start off playing with a few riffs and chords and see where it takes us. The lyrics are Lucy’s self therapy! A lot can be started, resolved, decided when you finally get it on paper! Writing is usually quite frustrating, its the recording that’s the fun part. Jumping in the studio and smashing out our parts and watching the song evolve from an idea into a full track!

What inspires you? The support of our family and friends makes it very difficult to quit! Watching amazing live music also either inspires us or makes us very jealous. Both result in more practice and more nights out.

Best thing about playing in Wales?  We love the accent as we have really dull Surrey voices. For example….’I’ve got a real passion for yoghurt’ lol!

Who are your role models or idols? Wes Borland, Dave Grohl, Geeza Butler, Dom Howard and whoever is the most fashionable deity atm and Arnold Schwarzenegger! ‘Get to the choppa! Now!

In your opinion whats the hardest thing about the current business?  Saturation of genre and trying to build a fan base and promote yourself on a budget.

What are your future plans?  GIG GIG GIG (world domination)

Finally, one question we ask everyone, who is your favourite Batman actor?  Adam West of course…no one looks as inconspicuous doing the bat shuffle in a night club, That’ll help him blend right in!

I really urge you to check this bands out, you definitely wont regret it!
