Miss Vincent’s Playlist

Miss Vincent

Miss Vincent recently released their brand new album Reasons Not To Sleep. Wanting to know a bit more about the music that inspires them, we caught up with them to get an insight into their tastes. Check out the playlist below and listen to it in full on our last.fm page.

A song that influenced them
Ramones – Sheena Is A Punk Rocker

I could put almost any Ramones song here. Their sound and influence is completely transcendent. This song just makes me want to dance, and it never, ever fails to pull me out of a bad mood. The minute I heard it, I grabbed a guitar and listened to it about fifteen million times on repeat. Rocket To Russia was like a million lightbulbs going on in my head, and this song played a huge part in that.

A song they wish they could have written
Bob Dylan – Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.

There’s loads of songs from my favourite bands that I listen to and think “fuck, I wish I could have come up with that”, but I grew up listening to Dylan and Cat Stevens because my Dad’s always been a massive folk fan, and everything about this song makes me wish I’d written it. The fingerpicking made me sit with an acoustic for hours as a kid trying to figure it out, and the lyrics are painfully poetic. This song can break your heart and heal it in the space of 3 1/2 minutes.

Their favourite Miss Vincent song
You Can’t Spell Blame Without ME

This was the last song we wrote for Reasons Not To Sleep. I just love all the bits in it, from the bass riff to the atmospheric bridge, and the slow chorus at the end genuinely gave me goosebumps in the studio. It’s a really personal song and I can get a little bit heartfelt playing it live sometimes! I’m really proud of this song, which is unusual because normally I spend hours after writing something dissecting why I hate it.

A song they have recently been listening to a lot
Bayside – The Ghost of St Valentine

We’re all huge Bayside fans, and whenever we’re on tour there’s barely a drive that goes by without Bayside on the stereo! I lost my copy of Shudder a while back, and I’ve only just got it back on my iPod – this song has been circling my head for days and I can’t get enough of it.

Their all-time favourite song
Alkaline Trio – Sadie

Wow, that’s almost impossible! At the risk of thinking about this for all eternity and still not coming up with an answer, I’m going to go with Sadie. I should probably go with something super obscure that makes me look like a muso, but this song never fails to hit me like a ton of bricks. It’s written about Susan Atkins aka Sadie Mae Glutz, a member of the Manson Family who was convicted for her involvement in 8 murders. She was essentially brainwashed into living her life under Manson’s command, and the song makes me wonder every time about what she must have gone through to make her feel like what she was doing was justified. Skiba’s lyrics in this are just beautiful, he has a way of turning something horrible into something heart wrenching.
