Interview With In This Moment

In This Moment 2015

Last month we headed up to Manchester to see In This Moment perform at Academy 2 – see our review here. Ahead of the show, we caught up with the band’s lead guitarist Chris Howorth for a quick chat. See what happened below!

So you’ve been on tour in Europe for just over a week, how’s it all going so far?
It’s been really awesome. We’ve been really happy with the turnouts – a lot of people are here and they all know the songs and are singing the words, they’re dressing up like Maria and it’s really awesome!

What show has been the best?
Tonight! It hasn’t happened yet, but it’s going to be the best! But honestly, it’s really hard to pick the best one because they’ve all been really good. Glasgow was insane, they clapped and chanted and stuff, which we’ve never really experienced before, but they’ve all been amazing. Like I said before, fans are showing up and they’re just so into it, just like in America! We didn’t really know what to expect but we weren’t really expecting that.

How does playing in Europe compare to shows back home in America?
They’re comparable; we’ve done really well in America these past few years but we’ve never really done anything over here. We’ve had some good shows but it’s never really been…in America, people are showing up and singing – and we can feel like something’s happening. But here we were a little scared to come because we’ve never really been over here and headlined…so we wondered if anyone would show up and even if they knew us! But it’s been the same, if not better over here because honestly, the passion is really strong.

There’s some things that’s better in America, such as the touring itself because the buses are bigger and nicer. The food’s been great here though, and there’s nothing to complain about. I would say the fans over here…well, I don’t want to say they’re more passionate, like we’re throwing down the gauntlet to our other fans! But the Blood Legion worldwide is really passionate and people over here are extremely passionate, so it’s amazing.

So has there been any interesting stories from the tour so far?
(calling to his other band mates across the room) Any good stories, you guys? I can’t think of anything that’s happened!
Tom (drums): Generally waking up and eating?
Chris: That’s not a good story! We’re talking about anything crazy over here!
Tom: France was awesome.
Chris: Yeah. It’s not really crazy to any of you guys but to us it’s crazy when the crowd is chanting “let’s fucking go!” over and over!

If you could choose an animal to represent the band, what would you choose?
Oh man…I guess we’ve already done this with the bunny rabbit and the butterfly motifs on our previous albums, but if I could choose an animal to represent the band it would be a shark. It just keeps going and going, and eating, and going.

And it’s dangerous too!
Yeah, it’ll bite you!

If you could replace the soundtrack to a movie with In This Moment’s music, what film would you choose?
Ooh, that would be cool. We always try to think about our stuff being in movies…I think it would be like Underworld or some kind of dark sci-fi vampire-type thing.

Similarly, if there was going to be a movie released about the band, what actor would you want to play yourself?
John Travolta! (laughs)

And if In This Moment could put their name to a product, what would it be and why?
What a great question! Hm…any product…diapers?
(everyone starts laughing)

Why…?
It fits the name! And we need them on tour all the time. (laughs again)
