Interview with The Morning Chorus

Say hello to The Morning Chorus, The band formed from the ashes of MyOnlyChance, featuring Tom Stilgoe – Vocals/Guitar, Aaron Johncock – Guitar/Vocals, Andrew Stephens – Bass/Vocals and Aaron Gilbert on Drums. The band have one song up on their facebook page at the moment, ‘The Burden’ and it’s enough to make me eager to hear more, it’s a slow builder that crescendo’s into an excellent chorus. We caught up with the band to find out all about them.

Please introduce yourself to our readers?
We are The Morning Chorus, we are a band. We consider ourselves to be a more attractive version of ‘One Direction’. But seriously we are a Alt/Rock band with a soft side, In a similar vein to Jimmy eat world.

Where did the bands name come from?
Tom came up with it, It’s something to do with birds and soundwaves.

How did you get started?
We are all former members of a band called MyOnlyChance. When we lost our singer and guitarist we wanted to carry on with the band but our new sound needed a new beginning.

What have you got going on at the moment?
We are recording early next year with Wales’ own legendary producer Romesh Dodangoda. Really looking forward to that! Our EP should be available in March 2013.

Other than that, We are right this minute putting a video together for ‘Sunshine Breaks’ So keep an eye out for that!

Favourite music and why?
If we aren’t listening to Whale song, which we will be! We all enjoy a bit of Jimmy Eat World. I’d say they are a pretty big influence on our sound. Other loves include Pompeii, Relient K & Moving Mountains

Favourite book and why?
We are illiterate, Thanks for bringing that up. We are paying some guy to read this out for us, he’s not the cheapest but he does offer the ‘Happy ending’ service that we all enjoy.

Favourite film and why?
50 shades of grey, we love liam neeson!

Best experience in the business?
As we are still a pretty new band we haven’t had a lot of experiences. So i guess this questionnaire is it! WOOO!

Why should soundscape readers care?
Because we have a particular set of skills that make our music a delight to you.. if you don’t care, we will look for you… We will find you and we will sandblast you with kittens.

Tell our readers an interesting fact about the band?
Most of our working titles have Aarons name followed by a nasty word in them

What’s the best and worst things about touring?
Best: Gigging, meeting new people, recieving compliments. It’s all good baby!  Worst: The Food! I know we are responsible for what we eat but on tour we don’t eat much other than Ginsters and energy drinks (yes we eat energy drinks)

Most embarrassing thing to happen to you while in the band?
We are pretty hard to embarrass, We are pretty layed back and have no shame!

What’s your writing and recording process?
We steal all of our songs from the Korean music charts. Our next hit is called grandma style.

What inspires you?
Tom wrote ‘The Burden’ about his girlfriend, who suffers from an undiagnosed long term illness. We are inspired musically by life experiences, we like to think that it makes our music easy to relate to.

Best thing about coming from playing in Wales?
We have played In Wales before as MyOnlyChance at ‘Le Pub’ in Newport. We really enjoyed that show, Lost of people, good atmoshere, minimal stabbings. All in all a good gig.

Who are your role models/idols?
I don’t know if I’d say Idol, but Will Ferrel! we all love him and his baby punching antics. And Zach galifianakis for his awkward moments and looking like a terrorist.

Hardest thing about the current business?
For us it would have to be the burden of success.

Favourite Batman actor?
Bruce Willis, (‘The Dark Knight Dies Hard’ 2022)
