Interview with Ally Burnett

Ally Burnett 1 (1)

In our attempt to bring you music from all over the world I would like to introduce you to American singer songwriter Ally Burnett, one very talented individual. Ally’s music is a regular on various american TV shows, such as ‘Jersey Shore’ and ‘The Hills’ and she has just released her latest EP ‘So Close, So Far’ on iTunes. The EP is 5 tracks of great sounding, accessible pop/rock full of catchy melodies and Ally’s flawless vocals. We spoke to Ally to ask her some questions.

How did you get started?

I started singing when I was 4 and never looked back. Grew up in choir, theater, vocal coaching, and auditioning. Started fronting bands after high school, and went solo a few years ago.

What have you got going on at the moment?

I just released an EP called “So Close. So Far.”, so I’m currently working on promoting that.

Favourite music and why?

I love all kinds of music, but these days I find myself drawn to stuff that makes me feel nostalgic. Lots of Something Corporate and Jimmy Eat World; music that reminds me why I do what I do in the first place. I also like a lot of indie artists like myself, some of my favorite being Samantha Darnell and The Decoration.

Favourite book and why?

I think my current favorites are “Bossypants” by Tina Fey and anything by Tucker Max.

Favourite film and why?

There’s so many good ones to choose from. I’m a fan of comedies, mostly. I think it’s a tie between Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Empire Records.

Best experience in the business?

Having my music featured on shows like “Jersey Shore” several times and writing the theme song for MTV’s “The Seven” have definitely been highlights for me.

Why should soundscape readers care?

It’s not up to me to make anyone care, only the reader can do that. The reader is the only person that can decide if they care enough to listen my music. I just write what I know, what I feel, and hope that someone somewhere can connect to it. I know not everyone is going to like my music and I accept that. If you like pop music with a heart and songs with actual meaning behind them though, you’ll like what I’m doing!

Tell our readers an interesting fact about yourself?

When I’m not making music, I’m in the kitchen testing out recipes. I’m obsessed with baking and cooking!

Who are your role models/idols?

Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate/Jack’s Mannequin) is definitely my biggest musical inspiration. His songs are very real, very heartfelt, and he sounds just as amazing live as he does on a record, which is something few singers can say these days.

Hardest thing about the current business?

Being 100% independent. No label, no manager, no PR person. I do everything myself and have to pay for everything out of pocket, so it can be really difficult at times. Couldn’t picture myself doing anything else though!
