Interview With Hildamay

We got the chance to interview the awesome Hildamay whilst they were recently out on a UK tour. This is what happened:

Could you introduce yourselves and tell us a bit about the band?
Hi. We’re Hildamay from Sidcup in Kent. We play rock ‘n’ roll music.

How did the band get started?
Basically, Hildamay had been together since 2008 and then in 2010 when our old band Liars Club split up myself and Chris took over vocals and rhythm guitar and we went from there.

You recently released your single Drag – could you tell us a little bit about it and the writing/recording process?
We basically had had quite a quiet year in 2013 after a busy 2012 and releasing our album Miles Away. So we just wrote and wrote and wrote. Out of that came a records worth of songs and we decided to drop a single out of what we were doing and Drag came out on top. It shows a darker side to the band much like The Light when we released that. The recording process at Hidden Track Studios was amazing as always. Oz is like our musical guru so it’s the optimal place for us to record. He gets the best from all of us, and I honestly don’t think we’d ever go anywhere else.

You’re currently touring with Steak Number Eight – how’s it going so far?
Amazing. They are an amazing and apparently in the UK underrated band. It is as if Mastodon and Nirvana made love and made musical babies. They are truly one of the best European bands we have ever seen and we are honoured to be on the road with them. Also make sure to check out ZOAX who are also awesome.

Any interesting stories to report?
I’ve worn the same pants for 4 days? Other than that the usual rock and roll debauchery of TVs out of windows and dressing room brawls.

I saw you supporting FFAF back in July and you blew me away – how do you manage to make your live shows so memorable?
We basically pour our heart and souls into everything we do, both in the studio and on record. We love that band and it was one of the highlights so far to be asked to support them and that helped fuel our live performance.

What would you say the strangest show you’ve ever played has been?
Playing in a living room at a house party shooting a video. Strange but brilliant

If you could play a show with any band, who would it be?
We’ve been lucky enough to already play with some of our idols in Hot Water Music but I guess we’d have to say a bill of Hildamay, At The Drive In, Hot Water Music, Refused and Thrice would be pretty special. We’d go on first OBVIOUSLY.

Similarly if you could collaborate with any band or musician, who would it be?
In terms of bands from the past I think we’d all love to collaborate with Nirvana or The Clash. Both those bands were responsible for huge changes in the way we perceive music and culture.

If you could have any artist cover one of your songs, what song and artist would you choose?
I’d love to hear an Attention Thieves cover of one of our songs. Mainly because they always bang on about doing it but never bloody do. So maybe it’d shut them up! 😉

And what are your plans for 2014?
Keep writing, recording and releasing new music. And of course play as many shows as possible.
