Interview with Blowgoat

After first being blown away by their EP and then being blown away by their set at Merthyr Rock we couldn’t resist not asking them for a cheeky interview. You can catch this monster of a five piece at both Clwb Ifor Bach and Le Pub on Halloween.

How did the menacing force that is Blowgoat get started?
Me, Conway and Wookey became binge drinking / jammin buddies. It was a joke to start with, we were called Free Beer. It kind of just built up from there and eventually we realised we had something. Conway was in another band at the time, Die Chihuahua Die, he fucked that off and Paul (vocalist) also from DCD did the same to join us. We found Barry (bass) in a wheelie bin by The Meze and gave him a bass and I guess the rest is history.

What have you got going on at the moment?
We’re going out with Baby Godzilla and Dead Harts during October and then Chick Rides Artist in Nov. All details on www.blowgoat.com. All of those bands are fucking slamming, check them out. Got some local stuff with Manhattan Coast and Beasts coming up and check out New Hour fest in Bristol, loads of tearing bands playing that, looking forward to it!

Any plans to record a new EP?
We’re currently writing new shit, we’ve got some tearin new ones. Probably release a new record summer next year, hold on to your privates ‘cos we will blow them off. Most likely record in space, or deep in the earths core, not in a gay way though.

Can you tell us the story behind the B.Y.F.H tattoos the band have?
Max from The Amsterdam Red Light District bought me a bottle of Jäger for my birthday when we were out with them back in April and we got pissed up and tattooed each other at this girl called Marie’s house who came to a show in Bridlington.

Blowgoat are known to be quite the destructive band live, what’s the worst injury come across so far? And strangest gig scenario you’ve come across?
I took a cymbal to the face and had 9 stitches. Barry jumped off the bar at Le Pub and broke his foot. Paul fell onto a monitor and broke his rib. Wookey got caught in the face with head stock which was quite nasty. Conway broke his hand and there’s been loads of broken fingers and black eyes and shit, not sure which one is the worse, they all sucked. Strangest gig, we showed up at this dudes pub in the middle of the Hampshire countryside for this festival. We arrived and saw the massive outdoor stage in the field behind his pub and thought ‘this is gonna be bitchin!’ The band that played before were heavier than us and we went on and after our first song… silence. Not one fuck given by anyone. So we looked at each other and thought ‘shall we bother?’ Then I thought we spend all day in a van to go and spend half hour playing guitar and drums, bad ratio. So played our shit back to back, giving just as many fucks about them as they gave about us and then we fucked off home.

What inspires the band to play?
Fuck knows, listening to / watching other bands like The Bronx, Baby Godzilla, Storm The Walls, TARLD, Outcry Collective, The Cumshots. They’re the most influential to me in terms of live performance.

It isn’t a secret Blowgoat like their drink, what rock group/star would you like to have a drinking match with?
We would like to go drinking with the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia because they are some lads! And they are a band in one episode so it totally counts. If not, the entire cast of New Girl except for everyone who is not Zooey Deschanel.

If you could go back to any era what would it be?
Whatever era it was just before squatting down on stage like a shitting fucking house cat in a litter tray and getting your neck tattooed and hair dyed black was cool.

Where do you like to see Blowgoat in five years?
Fuck knows, no shitty day jobs. At least breaking even or making the bare minimum to keep us on the road and in the studio permanently.

Having been in various bands before Blowgoat, what do you think the hardest thing about the current business is? Any tips for new young bands?
My advice to young bands is move to Germany.

Final question, the one we ask everyone, who is your favourite Batman actor?
Clooney’s arse did look amazing.

EXTRA TIME
Favourite curse word?

Gonna go with cunt.

If you could choose to have a super natural power what would it be?
Oragazmo-ray.

Most embarrassing clothing item owned by you or a band mate?
Barry is still wearing some girl’s guts on his fingers.

What’s the last album you bought?
Just got Gallows’ new record and Feed The Rhino’s new one. Tearin, they’re out together at the mo, can’t wait to see the show. We’ve also been absolutely rinsing the self titled Clutch album in the van as well, it’s just not getting old.

You can find detials to pick up the EP on their Facebook and Website.
Be sure to catch them live – you’ll be glad you did.
