This week’s A-Z is a little bit evil…E.Vil, to be precise!
Probably better known as Elias Viljanen, aka the guitarist of Sonata Arctica, E.Vil is the name he goes by for his solo project and if you love fancy guitarwork and lots of riffs, you definitely need to check his stuff out.
After receiving a recording contract on the strength of a three-track demo entitled The Axe Master (which he practised for 2-3 hours for about 4 months for!!) he released his debut album Taking The Lead in 2002, featuring twelve tracks of mindnumbingly complex instrumental guitar work. A reissue of the album in 2011 featured a bonus live DVD and one of the tracks can be viewed in all its glory below.

His most recent release Fire Hearted was released in 2009 and for the first time featured vocals on two tracks, courtesy of Marco Hietala (Nightwish) and Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica).
More recently, Elias has been playing short solo sets of his material whilst on tour with Sonata Arctica on the occasions where the band weren’t able to perform their acoustic set. To say it was a treat to witness is certainly an understatement – definitely a sight worth seeing!
If you’re into your instrumental stuff, then you’ll love this – but alternatively even if you don’t, why not check his stuff out anyway? You won’t be disappointed, trust me.
