Soundscape’s A-Z Of Bands: Deadlock

This week, our featured band is German melodic death metallers Deadlock.

The band began life in 1997 as a hardcore band and put out two releases – a self-titled demo and an EP entitled I’ll Wake You, When Spring Awakes – before embarking on a change of genre with their debut album The Arrival. Featuring guest clean female vocals from Sabine (who was promoted to a full-time member after the release of album number two, Earth.Revolt) as well as more melody in general such as orchestral elements, this is the route the band have largely followed ever since.

2007 saw the release of their third studio album Wolves, from which the band took the song for their debut music video Code Of Honor from, which has become somewhat of a Deadlock anthem – indeed, on their 2014 best-of The Arrival, the band reworked it to feature guest vocals from Heaven Shall Burn’s Markus Bischoff!

Three more albums have followed since, with their most recent studio album being 2013’s incredible offering The Arsonist, which is the first album to feature harsh vocals from John following the departure of one of the band’s founding members Joe. Featuring ten tracks of beauty and aggression, it’s exactly what Deadlock does best and really showcases just how talented the band is.

In September of this year, the sad news was brought that the band’s founding drummer Tobi, who had left the band earlier in the year to be with his family, had passed away aged 35. But, as he said in the statement he made when announcing his departure from the band, “the bass drum line of End Begins will always beat in his heart.[sic]

However, on a lighter note, 2014 also saw Deadlock release a best-of album entitled The Re-Arrival, and rather than cobble together a bunch of tracks with zero effort from all included, the band reworked and rearranged every song included, and even included three brand new tracks! If you’re looking to get into this band, then that may be the best album to start off with, as it gives a great celebration into the band’s music from the start of their career to the end. So if you haven’t quite got into them yet – then what are you waiting for?
