Soundscape’s A-Z Of Bands: Anna Murphy

Anna Murphy

Some of you may be more familiar with Anna Murphy’s work as one eighth of folk metal outfit Eluveitie but, as well as featuring in several other colourful and intriguing projects, she is also an established solo artist and last year released her debut album, Cellar Darling.

Anna’s solo project first saw the light of day in 2012. Following the announcement that she’d almost completed writing her debut solo album, and that it was going to be metal nor folk, Anna premiered a first demo mix of the track Twin Flames (of which you can check out below) to give fans a taste of what they could expect from her solo work.

After announcing the title as Cellar Darling in mid-2013, Anna headed straight into the studio to begin work on her debut offering and a highly successful Kickstarter campaign followed not long after, with fans able to get standard perks such as downloads and physical copies of the upcoming album, shirt bundles and gig passes, as well as more unique perks such as postcards and personal paintings!

With the Kickstarter successfully funded (reaching a fantastic 113% of funding!) everything continued at full steam ahead, and Cellar Darling saw the light of day on September 27 last year and it didn’t leave our CD player for a good while, with us billing it as a true work of art.

Indeed, the album can also be described as a work of art in another way, as each of the seventeen tracks featuring on the release had their own accompanying artwork which was hand-painted by Anna herself! If you’re interested in seeing more the artwork for yourself, you can check out this feature on, or alternatively, you could always just pick up a copy of the album for yourself from her webstore. It’s a damn good listen, after all. 😉

More recently, Anna embarked on her first solo tour with Anneke Van Giersbergen earlier this year and although she’s perhaps going to have most of her energies focused on Eluveitie (who recently released their new album Origins and are currently touring in support of it) for the rest of 2014, hopefully 2015 will bring more tours and more awesome music from this talented musician.
